The Second Teacher Librarian Training Program–Visit to Hong Kong and Taiwan

November 13-19, 2016 & November 12-18, 2017

The successful completion of the first teacher librarian training program in June 2014 caught the attention of the Hefei Baohe Education Bureau, and upon their invitation, the 2nd Diploma Course is managed jointly by the Foundation and the EB. The 2nd program commenced in March 2016. spans 20 months and comprises of 10 modules, with visit to Hong Kong and Taiwan.

From November 13 to 19, 2016 and November 12 to 18, 2017, a delegation of top students and principals from Hefei visited Hong Kong and Taiwan. With the support from Hong Kong Teacher-Librarian’s Association, Taiwan Interlibrary Cooperation Association and National Taiwan Normal University, the delegates visited a number of institutions including schools, public libraries, independent bookstores and reading promotion NGOs, experienced the practical application of the program contents.

Towards the end of the visit, the delegates conducted small-group panel discussions to reflect upon to recap what they learned from the visit. The topics of the discussions include:

1. strategies for the development of library collections;

2. studies on library designs;

3. reading activities;

4. library and teaching of academic subjects;

5. role and positioning of teacher librarians;

6. comparison between primary and secondary schools’ reading promotion strategies

After visit, the delegates could understand the planning and policed mad by Hong Kong and Taiwan schools for developing libraries, so as to promote their development. From introduction of experience gained by the delegates, exchange on school library development between three places could be strengthen.
